After forming in June 2014, the Wyverns played their first competitive rugby at the Cardiff Pride ‘Enfys Shield’ 7’s tournament hosted by Cardiff Lions RFC in August 2014.

 

Following this, we played our first 15 man fixture against a local university side, Montefiore Exiles RFC, in October. This was a heavy loss but was a starting point for the rugby careers of the vast majority of the team.

 

Our second fixture was against an older side, the ‘Old Boys’ from the Exiles – Montefiore Veterans RFC. This game saw a massive improvement in play and while we undoubtedly lost again the progress could be seen.

 

Shortly before Christmas 2014 the club travelled to Cardiff to play the first fixture against another LGBT-inclusive side, the Cardiff Lions. A tight and competitive fixture saw the Wyverns only 7-5 down after 60 minutes but sadly ended up losing the game 17-5.

 

Our first win came in January 2015 when we travelled to the long-established King’s Cross Steelers to play their 3rd XV. The Wyverns overcame massive odds as their opponents has a much larger squad and many more substitutes to call upon – however we prevailed and won our first game 22-15.
